Environmental Science for the AP® Course was built from the ground up specifically to suit the needs of AP® environmental science teachers and students. Friedland/Relyea integrates AP® content and exam prep into a comprehensive college-level textbook, providing students and teachers with the resources they need to be successful in AP® Environmental Science.

Module Structure Chapters are divided into short Modules to help keep content manageable. Each module opens with a brief description of the topics covered.


Chapter Opening Case Study An intriguing case study begins each chapter and asks students to think about the environmental challenges and trade-offs that are introduced. The subjects of these studies often will spark spirited class discussion.

Learning Goals A list of key goals at the beginning of the module help to keep students focused. Each section of the module presents material related to a single learning goal.

Running glossary Key terms are set in bold type in the text and defined at the bottom of the page on which they are introduced. Key terms are also defined in the glossary at the end of the book.

Math practice makes perfect.
Do the Math Among the biggest challenges on the AP® Environmental Science Exam are questions that ask you to solve environmental science math problems. Every chapter contains between 1-3 "Do the Math" boxes which present math skills needed for the Exam. After showing students how to work a problem, they have an opportunity to practice on their own with "Your Turn.

Analyze and interpret visual data.
Photos and Illustrations The photos and illustrations in this book have been carefully chosen and developed to help students comprehend and remember key ideas.

Tables and Graphs To understand environmental science and succeed on the exam, students must develop the ability to read and interpret a variety of tables, graphs, and charts. This text presents data in a variety of formats with careful, well-paced explanations.

Module Review Review sections at the end of each module help students check their understanding before moving on to the next module.

Exam Prep All Year Each module ends with multiple-choice questions similar to those on the AP® exam.

Learning Goals Revisited A comprehensive review at the end of every chapter provides an opportunity to review the main ideas and key terms.

Prepare and practice for the AP® Environmental Science Exam. Chapter AP® 
Environmental Science Practice Exam A practice exam at the end of each chapter can be used for in-class assessment or homework. The practice exams familiarize students with AP®-style questions all year. The practice exam includes multiple-choice questions and free-response questions. Many of the questions require analysis of data or visual material.

Unit AP® Environmental Science Practice Exam The textbook is divided into 8 major units. At the end of each unit, there is a unit practice exam containing 20-25 multiple-choice questions and 2-3 free-response questions. These exams give students a chance to review material across multiple chapters and to practice AP®test-taking skills.

Cumulative AP® Environmental Science Practice Exam The text offers two cumulative exams that are fully aligned to the 2019 AP® CED with 80 multiple-choice questions and 3 free-response questions. These exams, located at the end of the book, match the actual AP® Environmental Science exam in length and scope.

Working Toward Sustainability This feature, located at the end of each chapter describes people and organizations that are making a difference. The feature includes critical thinking questions that give students a chance to hone their critical thinking and writing skills.

Learn about Science in the real world.
Science Applied At the end of each unit, the "Science Applied" feature offers an opportunity to read about how the science students are learning is used to make decisions about environmental issues.

Practice Free-Response Questions Science Applied essays includes a free-response question related to the topic in the article and concepts presented in the previous unit.
