Scoring with Poetry

Video created by Classroom Compass Administrator on Dec 5, 2017

In this webinar, Robin Aufses and Renee Shea, coauthors of Literature & Composition 2e will discuss strategies to both engage students in poetry and succeed on the AP® Exam. The lower scores on the 2017 exam point to the need for clear strategies to read poetry critically and write analytical interpretations under the pressures of time. By approaching poetry through the lens of language and argument, participants will explore how to avoid "beating [the poem] with a hose/ to find out what it really means," but instead to "walk inside the poem's room/ and feel the walls for a light switch," as former poet laureate Billy Collins writes in "Introduction to Poetry." The webinar leaders will focus on two specific poems in depth and offer suggestions for lesson plans for two others, one of which has appeared on the AP® Lit exam.
